Procedure
Motivation: Read Pheasant and King Fisher by Catherine Berndt or another Aboriginal story to introduce the lesson.
Have a class discussion on Aboriginal culture, symbols and art appropriate for grade level/unit of study.
Download and copy Aboriginal icon/symbols from the Jinta Desert Art Site on the Internet at www.jintaart.com.au/iconography/iconhmpg.htm
With pencil or chalk on black paper, create a design using the symbols from the symbols sheets. Australian animals make delightful subject matter in conjunction with the symbols.
The teacher should check designs for size. Drawing must be large so it will be easy to color with the blunt oil pastels.
With Cray-Pas oil pastels, fill in images using light valued colors (like yellow). Fill in some images with solid color and then outline them with dots.
Leave some black spaces open in the background for contrast.
Fill in background symbols with Cray-pas, and then add a dotted pattern for the background.
Work until most areas of the construction paper are designed.
Blend white into darker colors of oil pastel for contrast.
Work to completion.
Sign composition with a Gelly Roll metallic pen ( even works great on black paper! ) near the bottom in area along a curve not colored with Cray-Pas.
With small amounts of glue, mount black construction paper to white board and display.
Have students write an Aboriginal story, poem or description about the art. Display writings with art.
Write the title of the story with a Gelly Roll® metallic pen on the top edge of the Aboriginal painting in area not colored with Cray-Pas.
