Since 1998, Philadelphia artist James Mundie has been working on a series of portrait drawings called "Prodigies". The subjects of his drawings are those that would have once been called "freaks", performers from the bygone days of the circus or carnival sideshow. As one reviewer wrote, "By inserting his subjects into historical contexts, Mundie tests his audience's tolerance for aberration. His beautiful renderings of bizarre figures transform them from sideshow performers into empathetic characters."
The drawings in the series are small, intimate depictions that force the viewer to get up close to appreciate them. Many have remarked that the lush textures of stippling and crosshatching evoke rich aquatint etching or lithography. Mundie's exclusive drawing implement for this series has been Sakura's Pigma Micron pens for their "crisp, delicate line. . . I've tried many other brands, but Pigma Micron is unmatched."
